Wednesday 1st May to 15th October
Event: The Last Supper by Peter Barnes
Time: Tuesday to Saturday between 11am - 4pm
Cost: FREE
Details:
This amazing work of art has recently arrived at All Saints Parish Church in Leamington Spa. The sculpture was created by Peter Barnes and was inspired by the Last Supper painting of the same name by Leonardo da Vinci. It has been on its own pilgrimage on display in many churches in the south of England and will be exhibited at All Saints until early October 2024 before moving ever nothwards.
Peter Barnes says, “My aim was to re-create the painting as an abstract three dimensional form; I wanted to keep the detail to a minimum while retaining all the expression and interaction of the characters.” Peter estimates it is decorated with over 50,000 computer keys - some are placed at random, some form words or phrases from the Bible, ensuring you find something new each time you look.
Peter explains “I wanted this sculpture to be finished with a mosaic but not in the conventional way. I realised that a computer keyboard is made up of squares which could be used as tiles. This led me to thinking of the possibilities; the letters, numbers and symbols could be utilised to create further interest and meaning.”
The church, which is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am – 4pm, welcomes all to come and view this amazing piece of work in its wonderful setting. See if you can find the hidden paths within the sculpture and see where they lead. Try and discover the passages from the Bible and reflect on their massage.
